2009
This was a project that began in Brooklyn, New York where I was living for part of 2009. It was more of a study of intriguing buildings, extracted from context without the surrounding distractions. They float in a void of infinite nothing ready to be selected and placed side by side in a regimented line or in a designated perimeter square on a grid within a carefully designed city plan, like that of a computer simulation. Although not models, I want them to appear artificial, at an undistinguishable scale, as if they had been plucked from their base like an architectural model. It is rare to see a building that is totally visible, no corner blocked by another building or structure and seen from an elevated viewpoint, as if examining a recently extracted tooth that has never had more than one side exposed. The deconstruction of such surroundings and close inspection at a manageable scale is a way of adjusting and familiarising myself with an environment. Placing together components piece by piece developing a physical cityscape that I can relate to.
